But that doesn't fix the issue that people who don't like exploration content just don't want to deal with Aethercurrents at all. So they made Aethercurrents easier to get. But the dual requirement of finishing MSQ in that area and getting the currents annoyed people who didn't want to engage with the system. In HW and some places in SB, getting the Aethercurrents was an actual scavenger hunt, which made me and other people who like that kind of exploration very happy. I get that they can be annoying, but they're also one of the few mechanics that makes you actively look at and explore the environment rather than staring at the map or quest markers.īut I think what you're comment makes clear is that right now Aethercurrents are in an awkward middle ground. It’s how much time we have to spend on the ground doing pointless and/or weakly plot-relevant messenger boy stuff that gets on my nerves, and aethercurrents just becomes the whipping boy, taking the blame when really the problem is just weak sections of the MSQ (and me being impatient).Īnd also, yeah, we’re just spoiled by flight speed. Yeah, the random aggro resulting from mobs turning around during the extended channel time can be obnoxious - doubly so if you aren’t a DPS, since it takes even longer and I’m already annoyed I have to do this after running back and forth between two different locations with no proximity to aetheryte for no real purpose – but again, manageable. Some of them are stupid (most of the side quests, for example, have literally nothing to do with aethercurrents or the area or becoming “in tune” with the winds of the area), but they’re usually super quick and manageable. It’s just tedious and annoying, and I tend to find myself in such a rush to get through it that I start skipping cinematic with Chai Nuzz (or whatever his name is) because I already know I’m going to have 4 or 5 more of these trips to make and I don’t really care about his angsty self-doubt and “I’m better off not even trying” fear of failure (me too thanks), and the whole thing just annoys the crap out of me.Īnd I mean, over all, I don’t really mind aethercurrents. The real pain is the constant back-and-forth going on – like in ShB, where you’re going from the top of the lift or the little outcast village (forget its name) down to the shipyard and then back again, or to Eumore and back, or some variation thereof. At that point, why not just give flight when you finish that section of the MSQ? It’s such an arbitrary obstacle. But I can’t – I have to do the entire portion of the MSQ in that area, which is the earliest point I can fly. It would even be one thing if I could just go into the area, find them all, do the side quests, and fly from there on out. Neutral ground mount speed is god awful slow compared to flying, and we fly the vast majority of the time in FFXIV.
